Dark Coppice

You'll find yourself walking beneath a proper thick canopy of beech and oak at Dark Coppice, just outside Chipping Campden. The woodland stretches across decent acreage and lives up to its name - it's genuinely dark under the trees, which makes for a refreshing escape on a bright day. The forest floor is soft with leaf litter and moss, and if you time it right, you'll stumble through dappled light that makes the whole place feel rather atmospheric.

Walkers will get the most from this one. There are paths threading through the woodland, though they're not particularly well-marked or maintained, so you'll want decent boots and a bit of navigational nous. It's the kind of place where you can wander for an hour or two without seeing many others, which is precisely the point. Kids might enjoy the slightly spooky vibe for the first thirty minutes, but unless they're the type who love scrambling over fallen logs and spotting woodland creatures, they'll probably want to move on.

There's no visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of - just pull over nearby and walk in. Free access. The real value is as a breathing space between the Cotswolds attractions clustered around Chipping Campden and Moreton-in-Marsh. If you're staying at Moreton-in-Marsh Experience Freedom Glamping, Dark Coppice is barely twenty minutes away and makes a solid half-day outing to break up the prettier, busier parts of your holiday. Go on a weekday if possible.
