Dan Y Lleuad Wen

The walk down to Dan Y Lleuad Wen is steeper than you'd think, and you'll want proper shoes. The cave itself sits in a limestone gorge near Llangadog, and it's the kind of place that feels genuinely remote even though it's only a short drive from the main road. Inside, it's cool and damp - bring a torch unless you fancy shuffling about in near-darkness.

What you're actually looking at is a natural cave system carved into the hillside, with decent formations and that particular smell of wet stone that either appeals to you or it doesn't. The stream running through adds atmosphere. It's free to visit, which is brilliant, and you can potter about for twenty minutes to an hour depending on how much you want to explore the tighter passages.

Families with older kids and teenagers will find this genuinely interesting - it's different enough from the usual park routine to hold attention. Younger children might struggle with the dark and the scramble, truth be told. Walkers pass through here regularly, and it pairs well with the wider Carmarthenshire walking routes in the area.

Both Cosmos Camping and Brecon Beacons Camping & Caravan Park sit nearby - Cosmos especially close at under three miles out. Either makes a decent base if you're planning to explore the caves and the surrounding valleys. Just don't expect signposting to be brilliant once you're off the main paths.
