Dame Sarah Swift park

The wetland stretches out properly vast once you're actually standing at Dame Sarah Swift park, near Boston. It's a nature reserve that doesn't shout about itself - no grand visitor centre or café - just open water, reedbeds, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how little of it you get in daily life.

You're here for birdwatching mainly. Winter brings thousands of wildfowl - wigeon, pintail, shoveler - and if you time it right in autumn migration you'll spot things passing through that don't hang around long. Summer's less dramatic but the breeding season brings warblers and the odd bittern if you're lucky enough. The paths are straightforward, flat walks that won't knacker you out, though bring proper binoculars or you'll spend most of your time squinting at distant silhouettes.

It works well as a half-day outing if you're based at Orchard Holiday Park or Appletree Holiday Park - both three to four miles away - especially if you've got a keen birder in the family. Young kids might get restless after an hour unless they're genuinely into spotting things. Bring a notebook, something warm, and patience. The Lincolnshire fens aren't everyone's idea of drama - no cliffs, no forests - but they've got a certain appeal if you're after something low-key and genuinely wild.
