Cymer Castle (ruined)

The castle is barely there anymore - just weathered stone foundations and a few walls rising from overgrown grass on the edge of the Cader Idris foothills. What you're looking at are the remains of a 13th-century fortress built by Welsh princes, now owned by Cadw and left to the elements in a way that feels properly wild.

Walking the site takes twenty minutes, thirty if you're picking through rubble trying to work out what was what. The ruins themselves won't set your pulse racing, but the location does - you're standing at the edge of proper mountain country, with views across the Mawddach Valley that make the short detour from Dolgellau worthwhile. History buffs will appreciate the defensive positioning; kids might find the scrambling about on old stone walls mildly interesting for a bit, though there's not much interactive about it.

It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though the ground gets boggy after rain. Spring and early autumn are best - dry enough to poke around comfortably, with decent light for photographs. The nearest proper base is Torrent Walk Campsite, only 1.2 miles away, which makes this an easy morning's ramble if you're staying in the area. Llwyn yr Helm and Graig Wen are both within five miles if you want to combine it with walks up Cader Idris itself.

Honestly, treat it as a bonus rather than a destination in itself. The location is the real draw here, not the stones.
