Cutts Close Park

The moment you step into Cutts Close Park near Oakham, it's clear this is proper wildflower country. The reserve spreads across grassland and woodland with a genuine sense of being off the beaten track, which frankly makes a change in the East Midlands. You're walking through habitat that's been left to do its own thing - the sort of place where you'll spot butterflies in summer and hear more birdsong than traffic.

It's not dramatic, and that's the point. There are no views to Instagram, no visitor centre with a gift shop. What you get instead is a quiet hour or two among wildflowers, ideally from late spring onwards when the meadows are actually flowering. Serious nature spotters and photographers will get genuine value here; families with young kids might find it a bit samey after 45 minutes unless they're really into bug hunting.

The walk itself is manageable on mostly clear paths, though the ground can be boggy in patches after rain. Bring binoculars if you've got them. It costs nothing and you can turn up whenever you fancy - there's no gatehouse to check in at.
