Cumlodden Church of Scotland

The kirk sits quiet on its own at the head of Glen Kinglas, a modest stone structure that's been watching over this corner of Argyll for centuries. There's something about the stillness here - no crowds, no gift shop, just the building itself and the landscape pressing in around it. The churchyard matters as much as the church; old headstones lean at angles, weathered names barely readable, and the views down the glen are genuinely worth the walk alone.

It's the sort of place that appeals to folk interested in rural church history rather than grand Victorian chapels. You'll get more from it if you're already walking in Glen Kinglas or exploring the upper Cowal Peninsula - it doesn't warrant a special trip on its own, but as part of a wider wander around Cairndow and Loch Fyne, it works well. Allow maybe half an hour if you're treating it as a proper stop; longer if you're photographing the graveyard or sitting with a coffee thermos.

It's free, obviously, and there's no formal visiting arrangement to worry about - just turn up. The minor road to it is single-track and narrow, so take it slowly. Best visited when the light's good and the midges aren't - basically, avoid August if you can. Winter's brilliant for the views; summer can be a bit green and claustrophobic with bracken.
