Cumlodden

The drive down to Cumlodden Church takes you deep into Argyll countryside, rolling past Cairndow towards a landscape that feels properly remote. You're after a small, whitewashed kirk sitting alone on a hillside - the kind of place that makes you understand why people settled here centuries ago, and why they might've wanted God nearby.

It's a working parish church, modest and genuine, with the sort of weathered charm that comes from actually being used rather than preserved behind velvet ropes. The graveyard tells stories - you'll find stones dating back generations, many weathered to near illegibility. The church itself dates to the 18th century, rebuilt on an older site, and there's something affecting about that continuity. Not grand, not trying to impress. Just there.

This appeals most to walkers working the glens and folk with a genuine interest in Scottish ecclesiastical history rather than casual tourists. Allow 30-45 minutes, longer if you're the type to read gravestones properly. It's free, as these rural churches tend to be, though the opening situation is a bit vague - you might find it locked, you might not.

For a caravan park base, Fyne Glamping sits closest at under two miles, though Strathlachlan isn't much further. Either makes sense if you're exploring Argyll's quieter corners. The Glen Kinglas walks nearby are excellent if you want to combine this with proper hiking. Come off-season if you can - the solitude here is rather the point.
