Culloch Hill

At 470 metres, Culloch Hill doesn't rank among Scotland's heavyweights, but what it lacks in height it makes up for in accessibility and views. The climb from Dalbeattie takes about an hour of steady walking through mixed woodland before you emerge onto the open summit with its distinctive trig point.

Walkers will appreciate the well-defined path that winds through the forest - it's clear enough that you won't need an Ordnance Survey map, though the final push gets a bit steeper. Families with older children (say 8 plus) should manage fine, but toddlers might find the ascent too much.

From the top, you get proper views across the Solway Firth on a clear day, with the Lake District fells visible to the south. It's particularly lovely in autumn when the surrounding woodland shows off its colours. The whole trip takes around two to three hours return, making it a perfect morning or afternoon activity.

For those staying at nearby parks like Glenearly or Beeswing, Culloch Hill makes an excellent leg-stretcher without the commitment of a full day's walking. The lack of crowds is a bonus too - you'll often have the summit to yourself, which is rare for hills this close to town. Pack a flask and some sandwiches; the summit's flat enough for a proper picnic with a view.
