Cullercoats Methodist Church sits just back from the promenade, a proper Victorian Gothic affair with decent stained glass and a real sense of local heritage baked into its walls.

Inside, it's all high ceilings and period detail - the sort of place that makes you realise how seriously people took their Sunday worship a century ago. The stained glass is the real draw here, catching the light beautifully on a clear morning. It's not vast or overwhelming, which somehow makes it feel more genuine than some of the grander ecclesiastical buildings you'll find inland.

Families with school-age children might find a quick look interesting if they're already at the beach, though it won't keep anyone occupied for long. History buffs and anyone interested in Victorian architecture will get more from it. The real value is as a peaceful spot to duck into during a seaside walk - you'll likely have it to yourself.

If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Whitley Bay Holiday Park just down the road, it's an easy leg-stretch before heading back to the caravan. The Old Hartley Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is slightly further north, but close enough for a morning wander. Allow fifteen minutes here, maybe thirty if you're genuinely into the architecture. No admission charge as far as we can tell, though opening hours can be a bit hit-or-miss depending on the week.
