Crummock Bank Farm : Sunflower Fields

The sunflower fields at Crummock Bank Farm are a proper riot of colour come late summer. Row after row of those massive yellow heads turning to follow the sun across the Cumbrian sky - it's the kind of thing that stops you in your tracks, even if you think you've seen enough Instagram-ready landscapes to last a lifetime.

This is working farmland near Wigton, so don't expect manicured gardens or visitor facilities. You're essentially turning up to watch someone's crop do what it does. The fields bloom typically from August onwards, and if you time it right - a clear morning with the sun behind you - the photos practically take themselves. Bring a decent camera or phone, though, because the light matters here.

Families with young kids will get a kick out of spotting how tall the plants grow, and it's a decent photo stop if you're touring the Lake District's quieter reaches. Walkers en route to the fells can easily detour here without losing much time. Given it's a farm, check locally before you go - opening access isn't guaranteed year-round, and harvesting times will shift the whole experience.

Stay at Wallace Lane Farm Holiday Park or Skiddaw View - both sit within reasonable distance and offer proper bases for exploring the northern lakes. Crummock Bank works best as part of a wider drive through Cumbria rather than a destination unto itself. It's worth the detour if you're already in the area, but don't plan your entire trip around it.
