Crugynnau

The walk up Crugynnau rewards you with proper 360-degree views across the Powys landscape - moorland stretching in every direction, with the Cambrian Mountains forming a dramatic spine to the west. It's a modest peak by Welsh standards, but that's rather the point. You won't spend three hours scrambling up loose scree or navigating technical terrain. Instead, it's a straightforward walk that feels genuinely wild without being punishing.

The summit itself is windswept and open, scattered with rough grasses and the occasional stone cairn. On a clear day you can pick out distant ridges and valleys rolling toward Caersws below. The ascent takes about an hour from the road depending on your pace and fitness. It's the kind of walk where you can turn round halfway without feeling cheated, or press on to the top and feel genuinely accomplished.

For families with older kids, it's excellent - no dangerous drops or technical bits, just honest moorland walking. Experienced walkers might find it a shade short for a full day out, but as part of a broader peak-bagging session through the Powys ranges, it slots in nicely. Bring proper boots and check the weather; exposed summits have a habit of turning miserable fast.

If you're based at Love2Stay Mid Wales or Gellidywyll just down the valley, Crugynnau makes a cracking half-day expedition. The moorland terrain means it's properly wild and atmospheric even when the weather's just okay. Worth the drive from Caersws, certainly.
