Cruach na Gaibhre

The walk up Cruach na Gaibhre from Tarbert is properly rewarding, even if the hill itself doesn't look like much from the road. You're looking at a straightforward trudge up moorland with decent views across the Kintyre Peninsula once you're up there - the kind of walk that takes about two hours return and leaves you feeling you've actually done something.

It's a walker's hill rather than a sightseeing destination. The path isn't marked brilliantly, and in wet weather the ground gets bog-like fairly quickly, so proper footwear matters. On a clear day you get views down to Arran and across to the Clyde, which makes the effort worthwhile. On a grey day it's just a slog across moorland.

Families with younger kids will find this punishing rather than fun - it's the sort of walk where children spend the last twenty minutes asking when you're stopping. Older teenagers who actually enjoy walking will be fine with it. For proper hillwalkers using Tarbert as a base, it's a decent morning outing that doesn't require a massive commitment.

If you're staying at Port Ban Holiday Park, it's close enough for an afternoon expedition, though the park itself is well-positioned if you're mixing coastal walks with a few moorland hills. The climb isn't technical and you don't need any equipment - just decent legs and weather luck. Start early to catch the light, and don't bother if cloud's sitting on the top.
