Crow Coal Hill

There's a trig point at the summit of Crow Coal Hill, and if you're the sort who likes ticking off the Ordnance Survey markers, this one's a straightforward walk from Bishop Auckland. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a moorland rise that gives decent views across County Durham when the weather plays ball. The walk itself takes about an hour return, depending on pace and how much you stop to catch your breath.

This is proper fell-walking country, which means it suits families with older kids and anyone who actually enjoys a bit of exercise without it turning into a mountaineering expedition. The ground underfoot can be boggy in places, so decent boots matter. Don't expect a café or facilities at the top - it's just you, the stone pillar, and the view.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - White House & Hagg Bridge is closest at just over a mile away - this works well as a morning outing before the weather turns. Westgate Caravan & Camping Site, a bit further out at 3.7 miles, gives you the same sort of access. The Pennines in this part of Durham can surprise you with sudden mist, so go early and don't linger if clouds roll in.

Worth doing? If you're already in the area and enjoy low-key walks with a purpose, yes. If you're driving specially from elsewhere, probably not. It's the kind of thing that feels good in the doing rather than spectacular in the remembering.
