Crouck Mass Rock

During the Penal Laws, when Catholics were banned from open worship, priests would say Mass at this remote spot in the Sperrin foothills, with lookouts posted to warn of approaching soldiers. The rock itself is simple, unadorned, weathered by centuries of rain and wind.

It's a walk to get there - nothing gruelling, but you'll need decent boots and shouldn't attempt it in foul weather. The landscape around Cookstown is proper moorland, bog and rough grass, and the Mass Rock sits in that honest, bleak terrain where you can actually picture people gathering in secret, risking arrest for their faith. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no café - just the rock and the history.

History enthusiasts will find this genuinely moving. Families with younger kids might struggle with both the walk and the lack of on-site facilities.
