Cross Stone (remains of)

There's not much left of Cross Stone, to be honest. What you're looking at near Bungay is essentially a weathered lump of masonry - the remains of a medieval wayside cross that's been battered by seven centuries of Norfolk weather. It's the sort of thing you stumble across rather than deliberately hunt for, which is probably the best way to experience it.

What makes it worth a glance is the sheer ordinariness of it all. Medieval crosses like this one were dotted across England, marking roads, parish boundaries, or places of local significance. This one's barely visible now, just stone fragments and a sense that something once mattered here. You won't spend long - five minutes tops - but it serves as a decent reminder that history isn't always grand or obvious.

Historians and church architecture enthusiasts will find it more interesting than most. Families with young kids won't get much from it. The real appeal is the walk itself. Bungay's a proper market town with decent pubs and the River Waveney running through it, so you could easily combine a ramble out to Cross Stone with exploring the town properly.

If you're camping at Wardley Hill or The Wildings Elms Meadow - both excellent sites just a few miles away - this makes for a short afternoon sortie. Free, accessible whenever, and the kind of thing that works best when you're not rushing. Don't expect romance or drama. Just go, have a look, and enjoy the Norfolk countryside around it.
