Cropston Reservoir

The water sits still and dark between wooded slopes just north of Leicester, a proper working reservoir that somehow feels miles from the city. Cropston holds about 300 acres of open water, and on a clear day the reflection of the sky makes it worth the short drive alone.

You can walk the full perimeter - it takes the best part of two hours at a reasonable pace - and there's decent bird life if you're patient. Herons, grebes, the occasional cormorant. The path alternates between proper woodland sections and open bankside stretches where you can see right across. It's not dramatic scenery, but there's something calming about it, especially on weekdays when it's nearly empty.

Families with young children will manage half the circuit without complaint. Older kids who like spotting birds or simply walking will find it solid. Walkers and photographers should go early, before the light gets harsh. Dog owners love this place - plenty of space to let them off lead, though the usual rules apply.

Access is free, as far as I can tell, and you can turn up whenever. There's a small car park at the main access point. Allow two hours for a full loop, ninety minutes if you're cutting it short.

If you're based at High Meadows Farm - the five-star spot just over five miles south - this makes a proper morning outing. Charnwood Acres, slightly closer at under four miles, is handier for a quick walk before breakfast.
