Cromarty Castle

The ruins of Cromarty Castle sit on a promontory overlooking the Moray Firth, about twenty minutes north of Inverness. What remains is modest - fractured stonework, tumbled walls, the ghost of what was once a significant medieval stronghold. You're essentially picking through archaeological remains rather than wandering through an intact castle, which is both its charm and its limitation.

The site itself is free to access and requires minimal time - half an hour maximum unless you're seriously into masonry patterns and Scottish feudal politics. The real draw is the location. The Firth views are genuinely good, and you get a sense of why someone would have bothered building here in the first place. It's a bracing walk from the car, especially in wind.

History enthusiasts will find something to chew on. The castle dates back centuries and its stones tell a story of power struggles and coastal defence. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming - there's not much to actually do once you've taken the photos. Walkers heading through the Black Isle will pass it without thinking twice if they don't know it's there, which seems a shame.
