Croft Hill

The walk up Croft Hill from Castle Douglas takes about forty minutes if you're not dawdling, and the effort pays back proper views across Dumfries and Galloway. It's not a serious hill - you're looking at something under 300 metres - but it's enough to earn a sense of achievement without needing fell-walking boots.

On a clear day the Solway Firth spreads out to the south, and you can pick out the patchwork of farmland rolling away in every direction. Locals use it regularly, which says something about how straightforward the ascent is. Families with reasonably active kids manage it fine; under-fives might grumble about the trudge back down.

The hill itself is moorland and rough grass - nothing fancy in terms of facilities or interpretation boards. What you get is walking and views, take it or leave it. There's a cairn at the top if you need proof you've summited something. Allow an hour and a half return if you're being leisurely, or just under that if you're powered by coffee and determination.

It's free to access, requires no booking, and works as well on a blustery day as a calm one - sometimes better, actually, when the light's dramatic. Pop into Castle Douglas itself for lunch beforehand; the town's got decent enough cafes and it's a proper working community rather than a tourist trap.
