Càrn nan Sgliat

The walk up Càrn nan Sgliat from Ballater takes you through proper Highland country. It's not a massive peak by Scottish standards - you're looking at around 900 metres - but the approach from the south is gradual enough that it doesn't feel like a slog.

What makes this one worth the effort is the view once you're up there. On a clear day you get the full sweep of the Cairngorms rising up to the west, with Lochnagar dominating the horizon. The walk itself takes about three hours return if you're not dawdling, though families with younger legs might want to allow four. There's a decent path most of the way, though it gets rockier as you climb.

This is walker's territory, pure and simple. If you're staying at Braemar Caravan Park - which sits barely a mile away and has a cracking reputation - it makes a natural day outing. The park's well-positioned for exploring this part of the Cairngorms, and having a base nearby means you can head out early and come back for a proper meal without feeling rushed.

Go on a weekday if you can. Summer brings the midges, so arm yourself. The ground can stay boggy well into June depending on rainfall. October's often the sweet spot - clear skies and fewer insects - though the weather turns faster than you'd expect up there. Always check conditions before setting out.
