Càrn Mòr

You're looking at a proper Highland peak that doesn't get mobbed like some of the more famous summits around Ballater. Càrn Mòr sits at around 3,200 feet and offers genuinely expansive views across Aberdeenshire once you've earned them. The walk in is straightforward enough - moorland terrain with cairns to guide you - but don't underestimate the climb. It'll take a solid three to four hours return if you're moving at a reasonable pace.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a Sunday stroll, but it's not a technical scramble either. The views pay dividends - you get proper mountain scenery without the queues you'd find on Ben Macdui. Autumn and early winter are cracking times to go if you can handle the weather. Bring good boots and waterproofs. The ground's boggy in places and the Scottish weather can turn on you.

If you're based at Braemar Caravan Park, you're brilliantly positioned. It's just a few miles away, so you can do this as a day outing without too much faff. Free to visit, obviously - it's a mountain. No facilities at the summit, so bring your own water and snacks. Allow a full day if you're not used to hill walking, or you want to take time for photos and just stand about enjoying the view. Worth the effort.
