Càrn Moine an Tighearn

The walk up Càrn Moine an Tighearn from Ballater is one of those Scottish hill days that sneaks up on you - modest height, but with proper views across the Highlands once you've earned them. The approach from the village isn't long, maybe two hours there and back for most walkers, but it's steep enough to get your heart going.

What you get at the top is the thing. On a clear day, which frankly you have to chase in this part of Aberdeenshire, you can see right across to the Cairngorms. On a dreich afternoon (and there will be plenty of those), you're often in the cloud, which feels properly atmospheric if you're into that sort of thing.

This is a walker's hill, no question. Not technical, but it demands respect - the weather changes fast up there, and there's nothing for it but your own two legs and decent boots. Families with older kids will manage it fine. Little ones will likely find it tedious. There's no visitor infrastructure at all, so bring water and something to eat.

It works perfectly as a half-day adventure if you're staying at Braemar Caravan Park nearby, or based in Ballater itself. Pair it with a walk around the village or a drive up Deeside, and you've got a proper day shaped. Free, obviously - just turn up and go. Early morning in summer gives you the best light and the fewest midges.
