Càrn an t-Sagairt Mòr

Càrn an t-Sagairt Mòr sits at 1,047 metres above Ballater, a proper hill that demands respect rather than a casual stroll. The name means 'cairn of the big priest' in Gaelic, though these days the only souls you'll meet up there are fellow walkers and the odd grouse startled from the heather. The summit cairn itself is modest - a pile of stones that's been added to by countless visitors over the years - but the views south towards the Cairngorms and west over the Deeside hills make the climb worthwhile. On a clear day you can see for miles.

This is a walk for anyone with reasonable legs and a head for heights. It's not technical, but the path can be boggy lower down and the wind gets fierce near the top. Allow three to four hours return from the car park near Braeriach. Winter transforms it entirely - snowfall can make it serious terrain, so check conditions first.

Staying at Braemar Caravan Park puts you just five miles away, making this an excellent morning or afternoon objective. The nearby Cairngorms offer multiple peaks if you want to string together a few days of hillwalking. Ballater itself is a pleasant stopping point for lunch beforehand - proper wee town with decent cafes. Free to climb, naturally, as with most Scottish hills. Go midweek if you can; weekends draw the crowds.
