Càrn a' Phris-ghiubhais

The walk up Càrn a' Phris-ghiubhais from Aviemore is proper steep in places, but the effort pays off. You're climbing through moorland and scattered pine forest, with the Cairngorms rising all around you. The summit itself is unremarkable - bare ground and scattered rocks - but the views back towards the Spey Valley are excellent, especially on a clear day when you can pick out Aviemore far below.

This isn't a peak for the casual stroller. You need proper boots, decent weather, and a reasonable level of fitness. Most people allow two and a half to three hours for the round trip depending on your pace. Winter requires mountain experience - people underestimate the Cairngorms and it catches people out.

It suits hillwalkers and anyone serious about bagging peaks in this part of the Highlands. Families with young children will struggle; teenagers who enjoy hiking will find it rewarding. The route is straightforward once you know where you're going, but signage isn't brilliant.

If you're staying at Dalraddy Holiday Park just down the road near Alvie, this makes an excellent half-day excursion. The park itself sits well for exploring the Cairngorms National Park area. Pack a packed lunch, bring a map, and start early - cloud tends to roll in by early afternoon even in summer. It's free to walk, obviously, and there's basic parking near the trailhead.
