Crickley Hill Country Park

The views from Crickley Hill stop you dead. On a clear day, you're looking out across the Severn Vale towards the Forest of Dean - proper commanding stuff. It's a substantial limestone escarpment just outside Cheltenham, and the walk up is steep enough to earn those views without being a proper slog.

The hill itself is Iron Age fort territory. There's a rampart system up there that tells you people chose this spot for good reason - defence, visibility, control. It's not dramatically excavated or interpretation-heavy, so you're doing a bit of imaginative work yourself. History buffs will find it worthwhile; families with young kids might get restless if they're expecting Cadbury World levels of engagement.

You can walk the perimeter, potter about the fort earthworks, and genuinely enjoy an hour or so up there. The Cotswold Edge Trail runs nearby if you fancy extending it. It's free to access and open year-round, though winter can be muddy and windswept.

If you're based at Star Glamping just down the road or one of the caravan parks dotted around Cheltenham, this is an obvious half-day circuit. Combine it with a walk in Symonds Yat or down to Painswick for a proper Cotswold day. Crickley Hill itself won't eat up a whole afternoon, but it's exactly the sort of spot that justifies a park holiday in this bit of Gloucestershire - good air, good views, and not overrun with tourists.
