Creag Phàdruig

The walk up Creag Phàdruig is one of those Scottish hills that doesn't advertise itself much, which is precisely why it's worth the effort. Standing above Ballater, it's a proper granite lump that rewards you with views across Deeside that'll make you forget you spent the last hour huffing uphill.

The path starts from the east side of the peak and winds through moorland and scattered pine - it's neither too technical nor dull, which makes it ideal for walkers who want something more substantial than a stroll but aren't ready to commit to a full day expedition. Allow two hours for the ascent and descent, maybe longer if you're not a regular hill person. The summit isn't vast, but the panorama across the valley towards Braemar is genuinely something. On a clear day you can see for miles.

Families with older kids will get on fine with it. Younger ones might find the moorland stretch repetitive. History buffs won't find much tangible here - it's the landscape itself that tells the story, really.

It's free, naturally, and you can access it year-round, though winter turns the approach into a proper scramble. If you're staying at Braemar Caravan Park, only 3.4 miles away, this makes a logical day out. The proximity to Ballater means you can grab supplies or a decent lunch afterwards, which I'd recommend - you'll have earned it.
