Creag Eilid

The walk up Creag Eilid from Pitlochry is shorter than you'd expect, and that's rather the point. At just over 300 metres, this isn't a slog - it's a proper hill rather than a mountain, which means you can knock it out in an afternoon without the full commitment of Ben Vane or anything more serious in the area.

The ascent itself is steep enough to get the blood moving, but most walkers tackle it in under an hour. You'll get decent views across Perthshire once you're up, looking back towards Pitlochry and the wider Tay Valley. It's the kind of spot that rewards a clear day - murky weather and you'll be in cloud within minutes. The path is straightforward enough, though it's rocky underfoot in places, so proper boots matter more than you'd think for such a modest height.

This works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Grandtully Station, Pitilie Pods, or Aberfeldy - and want something quick without driving far. It's ideal for families with older kids, or anyone wanting a leg-stretch between longer outings. Don't bother if you're expecting wilderness solitude; it's well-walked and popular for good reason.

Timing-wise, aim for morning in summer when the light's good and the midges haven't fully woken up. Free to access, no facilities at the summit, and bring water. Allow ninety minutes return if you're not rushing.
