Creag an Fhùdair

The walk up Creag an Fhùdair from Pitlochry isn't exactly a secret, but it's refreshingly unpretentious compared to some of the better-known peaks nearby. You're climbing 2,413 feet of proper hillside, and the views back down the valley are genuinely excellent - the kind that make you understand why people keep returning to this corner of Perthshire.

The route itself is straightforward woodland at first, then opens out onto moorland as you gain height. It takes the best part of three hours for most walkers, depending on pace and how often you stop to catch your breath. The summit cairn is modest, nothing dramatic, but the 360-degree panorama across Tayside is worth every step. On a clear day you're looking at Ben Vrackie, the Tay Valley spreading out below, and on your way back down you'll likely spot golden eagles if you're lucky with timing.

This is a hillwalker's hill rather than a casual stroll attraction. Families with teenagers who can manage the distance will find it rewarding, but younger kids might struggle with the persistence of it. Decent boots are essential - the terrain gets boggy in patches, particularly after rain.

If you're based at Glengoulandie Camping & Caravanning, the peak is within striking distance for a day's walk. The practical bonus: it's free to climb and there's no booking system. Just turn up early in the day and allow four to five hours round trip including summit time.
