Creag an Eunaich

The walk up Creag an Eunaich from Dunkeld is one of those Scottish hill routes that rewards you without demanding your lungs explode in the process. At 643 metres, it's properly manageable - more of a stiff walk than a serious mountain - but the views across the Tay Valley and beyond justify every step. The summit itself is fairly sparse, moorland rather than rocky drama, but on a clear day you're looking at genuine distance here.

This one suits walkers who want proper scenery without needing mountaineering experience. Families with decent hill legs will manage it, though you're looking at a couple of hours up and back depending on your pace. It's not a tourist scramble - you'll likely have it mostly to yourself, which is increasingly rare in Perthshire.

The practicalities are straightforward. There's no entrance fee or visitor centre nonsense; you just park near Dunkeld and get on with it. The ground can be boggy after rain, so check conditions and bring decent boots. Spring through autumn are your best bets weatherwise.

If you're staying at Inver Mill Farm or Erigmore just down the road, this works brilliantly as a half-day excursion alongside other valley walks. Dunkeld itself is worth an afternoon poking about - cathedral, river walks, decent cafes - but Creag an Eunaich gets you into actual landscape quickly. It's the sort of hill that doesn't make guidebook covers but makes you remember why you came to Perthshire in the first place.
