Creag a' Ghiubhais, Fort

There's not much left of Creag a' Ghiubhais, to be honest. The fort sits above Pitlochry on a rocky outcrop, and what remains are scattered stone foundations and earthwork traces from what was once an Iron Age settlement. You're looking at the bare bones of ancient Perthshire life - no reconstructions, no interpretive boards, just you and the hillside and a lot of imagination required.

Walkers get the most from this one. The approach itself is half the point - the scramble up through scrubby ground rewards you with proper views across the valley toward the Tummel. History enthusiasts will appreciate the simplicity of it; there's something compelling about standing where people built and lived two thousand years ago, even if all that's left are bumps in the turf. Kids might find it underwhelming without context, though adventurous ones who enjoy scrambling will enjoy the clambering about.

Allow an hour including the walk up from Pitlochry. It's free, naturally, and there's no formal visitor facilities. Best tackled on a clear day when the views justify the effort. If you're camping at Glengoulandie, which is only a few miles away, this pairs nicely with a wider walking day in the Tummel Valley. Don't expect a manicured heritage site. Expect a quiet corner of Perthshire where you can do your own detective work.
