Crathes Castle

The drive up to Crathes feels properly Scottish - all tree-lined approach and that sense you're heading somewhere that matters. The castle itself is a 16th-century tower house, built in 1553, all whitewashed walls and turrets that stick up against the Aberdeenshire sky like something from a children's book. Inside, the rooms are genuinely atmospheric. The painted ceilings - those vibrant biblical scenes and intricate patterns - are the real draw. Most folk spend a couple of hours wandering the six floors, though honestly the steep spiral stairs limit how long families with young kids will manage.

The grounds are what seals the deal. The walled garden is exceptional, properly maintained with herbaceous borders that work well even in Scotland's temperamental weather. There's woodland walks threading through the estate too, which breaks up a castle visit nicely if you've got restless legs.

Banchory sits just a couple of miles away, so it's an easy base. The nearby caravan parks - Silverbank and Banchory Lodge both rate highly - put you within striking distance without the Aberdeenshire sprawl. Admission isn't free (it's National Trust for Scotland), but parking is included. Allow three to four hours if you're thorough, less if the weather turns grim. Winter's quieter, spring's when the gardens really sing. History types and garden lovers will genuinely enjoy this. Small children might find the castle a bit much, but the grounds give everyone something.
