Crannies Hill

The walk up Crannies Hill takes about forty minutes if you're reasonably fit, and the effort pays off. From the summit near Biggar, you get proper views across the South Lanarkshire valleys - on a clear day you can see quite far. It's moorland terrain, so expect boggy patches and wind, especially in winter. The hill itself isn't dramatic or craggy despite the name; it's more of a steady climb through grassland that appeals to walkers who want a straightforward outing without scrambling.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger children might find the flat-ish moorland a bit dull unless you're keen on spotting wildlife. There's nothing up top - no cafe, no shelter, just views and the satisfaction of having earned them. Which is precisely why some people love it.

If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park just down the road, this makes an excellent morning walk before you head into Biggar for lunch. The moorland gets windy and wet quickly, so go early and check the forecast. Free to access, naturally. Allow a couple of hours including time to stand about and catch your breath. It's not a must-do, but if you're in the area and the weather's cooperating, it's a solid way to stretch your legs and see the landscape properly.
