About Cranmer's Mount

A modest grass mound on the edge of Nottingham, Cranmer's Mount marks where Thomas Cranmer - the Archbishop of Canterbury who rewrote the Book of Common Prayer - allegedly stood during a visit to the city. Whether he actually stood here is rather lost to time, but the site itself is genuine enough: a burial mound that predates Cranmer by centuries, later claimed as part of his story.

There's not much to do here, to be honest. You walk to the top, take in a view across Nottinghamshire's flat landscape, and that's your lot. It takes ten minutes, maybe fifteen if you're being thorough. The real pull is for history types who want to tick off Tudor connections, or anyone doing a serious walk around Nottingham's outer edges. Kids will find it dull unless they're already interested in the reformation.

The site is free and accessible any time - it's just a field, essentially. Worth combining with a proper wander through Nottingham's city centre or a visit to Sherwood Forest if you're in the area. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Janson Fishery is closest at just over a mile away - it's a reasonable morning stroll. Otherwise, it's not a reason to make a special trip into Nottinghamshire. The history's interesting in theory, but the experience itself is fairly thin on the ground.
