Cranbrook Union Windmill

Walk into Cranbrook on a clear day and you'll spot it straight away - a five-storey tower mill dominating the high street like something from a fairy tale. The Union Windmill is a proper survivor, built in 1814 and still standing with its white weatherboarded exterior and cap intact. Inside, the machinery is preserved in working order, though I'll be honest - climbing the narrow stairs gets a bit tight and the top floor rewards you with views across the Weald that are genuinely worth the huffing and puffing.

It's run by volunteers who clearly care about the place, and they'll talk your ear off about sail mechanics and grain production if you let them. Kids find the machinery fascinating for about twenty minutes before wanting to head back down, but keen photographers and industrial heritage types will spend considerably longer. The building itself photographs beautifully from the street, especially in late afternoon light when the weatherboarding glows.

Admission seems to be a voluntary donation rather than a fixed fee, which feels fair given it's unstaffed much of the time. Allow an hour if you're thorough, half that if you're just popping in. It works brilliantly as part of a wander through Cranbrook's town centre - there are decent shops and cafés nearby. If you're camping at Glassenbury just down the road, this makes a straightforward wet-weather plan or a quick stop between longer walks. The mill's right on the main route through town, so you won't struggle finding it.
