Craigton Hill

The walk up Craigton Hill rewards you with proper Highland views that don't require a full day's commitment. From Tullochvenus, it's a straightforward climb that takes most people around ninety minutes to the summit, where you'll get sweeping vistas across Aberdeenshire's rolling landscape.

What you're really after here is the sense of perspective. On a clear day, you can see for miles - the kind of visibility that makes you understand why people are obsessed with Scottish hills. The path itself is well-trodden and manageable, though it does get steep near the top. You won't need technical gear, but proper boots help.

Families with older kids will get something out of it. Younger ones might find the climb tedious without the summit view to motivate them. History types won't find much beyond the landscape itself - no ruins or ancient sites to speak of. This is walking for the sake of walking and views.

There's no charge and no facilities at the top, so bring water. Weekday mornings are quieter than weekends, though that matters less here than on busier peaks. Allow three hours total if you're not rushing.

Stay at either Aboyne Loch Caravan Park or Tarland Camping & Caravanning Club Site - both are within easy striking distance. Pair it with other walks in the area rather than making it your sole focus. It's solid without being spectacular, but it's worth doing if you're already in Aberdeenshire.
