Craigdoo

Rising to 488 metres above the Newcastle coastline, Craigdoo delivers proper mountain views without the slog of tackling Slieve Donard next door. I've climbed both, and while this one won't give you bragging rights as the highest peak in Northern Ireland, it's a cracking alternative for families or anyone wanting genuine Mourne scenery without the crowds.

The ascent from Newcastle takes about two hours up well-marked paths, though it gets steep near the summit. Kids over eight should manage it fine, and the payoff is worth every huffing step - sweeping views across the Irish Sea on clear days, with the full Mourne range spread out like a geological buffet.

Walkers serious about the Mournes often use Craigdoo as a warm-up peak or link it with neighbouring summits for a proper day out. The granite tor at the top makes a decent lunch spot, though bring layers - the weather can turn quickly up here.

Staying at one of the holiday parks near Newcastle puts you right at the trailhead. Tollymore Campsite and Camping Tollymore Forest Park, both five miles away, give easy access to the mountain paths. The Rock Caravan and Camping is even closer at under three miles, making it a sensible base for exploring the eastern Mournes without the tourist circus of the main peaks.
