Craig Rig

The walk up Craig Rig rewards you with proper views across the Lowlands - nothing dramatic, but genuinely lovely on a clear day. It's the kind of hill that looks modest from Biggar but feels like a proper achievement once you've done it, especially if you're base-camping at Mount View Caravan Park nearby.

This isn't a technical climb. The peak sits at a reasonable height without requiring scrambling or specialist kit, which means families with older kids and regular walkers will find it straightforward. You get sweeping vistas south towards the Southern Uplands and decent sightlines across the farming land that dominates this part of South Lanarkshire. The paths are reasonably maintained, though muddy patches aren't uncommon after rain.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip from the nearest parking - it's not a rush. The best light hits in late afternoon when the low sun catches the valleys properly. Go when the midges aren't about (autumn's your friend here) and bring a flask. There's not much shelter on the summit itself, so wind can bite.

It's not showy enough to plan an entire trip around, but it's exactly what you want when you're already in the area - honest, accessible, and properly worth the walk.
