Craig Hill

The walk up Craig Hill, just outside Biggar, is a proper little lung-opener. You're looking at maybe 45 minutes to the summit if you're moving steadily, less if you're a regular hill-basher. The peak itself sits at around 340 metres, which means the views across the Lowlands are genuinely decent - you can pick out the Southern Uplands rolling away to the south, and on a clear day the perspective back toward the Clyde Valley is worth the climb alone. It's not dramatic or Himalayan, but it's exactly what the Lowlands do well: honest, rolling countryside that unfolds in layers the higher you go. The path is straightforward enough, though it can be boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters. Most walkers take 90 minutes return, including a proper rest at the top. It's free, obviously - no visitor centre, no café, no faffing about. Just you and the hill. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage fine if they're used to walking; younger ones might find the pace tedious. History types won't find much to detain them - this is about the walking and the air, not ancient battlefields or ruins. If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park nearby, Craig Hill works as a morning mission before lunch, or a late afternoon wander if the light's good. It pairs well with exploring Biggar itself, which has some decent shops and pubs worth knowing about.
