Craig Doin

The walk up Craig Doin from Ballater is straightforward enough, though calling it a 'peak' feels generous - it's really more of a substantial hill that gives you a proper sense of achievement without requiring mountaineering skills. The path winds through Scottish moorland with views across Deeside, and on a clear day you can pick out the Cairngorms in the distance. Most people manage the ascent in under two hours, and the panorama from the top makes it feel worthwhile.

This is ideal territory for walkers who want something more challenging than a stroll but less technical than a serious mountain scramble. Families with older kids will find it manageable, though younger ones might struggle with the ascent - bring snacks and water. The terrain is exposed in places, so wind can be a factor, and you'll want decent boots if the ground is wet.

There's nothing up there except views and the satisfaction of standing on higher ground than you started from. No facilities, no visitor centre, no café - just heather and Aberdeenshire air. The whole outing, including a leisurely descent, takes most people three to four hours.
