Craig Cwm Silyn

The walk up Craig Cwm Silyn from near Caernarfon is steep, unforgiving, and absolutely worth doing if you've got the legs for it. This is proper mountain terrain - not a gentle ramble. The peak sits at 886 metres, and the approach via Cwm Silyn itself is relentless, with loose scree making the final push feel more technical than you'd expect for Welsh hillwalking.

The payoff is the view. On a clear day you're looking straight across Snowdonia toward the Glyders and Snowdon itself. South toward the Preseli Hills. North to Anglesey and the sea. It's the kind of perspective that makes the burning legs feel justified.

Walkers will get the most from this one. Families with younger kids should probably skip it unless they're properly experienced on mountains - there's exposure higher up and the descent is harder than the climb. Allow three to four hours return, longer if you're not a regular hillwalker. Go early in the day when the weather's still decent; afternoon mists can roll in quickly here.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Talymignedd is closest, barely twenty minutes away - this makes a proper day out. Beddgelert and Ty'n Llan are nearly as convenient. It's the kind of walk that separates the casual holiday wanderers from people who actually came to climb something. The views are genuine, the effort is real, and you'll sleep well that night.
