Craig Bhagailteach

The walk up Craig Bhagailteach is straightforward enough, starting near Pitlochry and climbing roughly 1,500 feet through mixed woodland before breaking out onto open moorland. The name sounds more dramatic than the ascent itself - it's less of a scramble and more of a steady plod, which means it suits walkers who'd rather not rope themselves up but still fancy proper views.

What you get at the top is genuinely worthwhile. On a clear day, the Tay Valley sprawls beneath you, and you can pick out Ben Vane and the surrounding peaks. The moorland's proper wild up here - purple heather in late summer, silence that actually feels like silence. Most people seem to bag it as part of a longer day in the hills rather than as a standalone outing.

Allow a good four hours for the round trip if you're not rushed. It's free to walk, naturally, and the ground is usually fairly well defined even in poor visibility, though waterproofs aren't optional. The best time is late August through September when the heather blooms and the midges aren't quite so murderous.

If you're based at Blair Castle Caravan Park nearby, this makes an ideal morning walk before heading back for lunch. River Tilt Park is closer but has mixed reviews - stick with Blair Castle if you can. It's the sort of hill that won't blow your mind but won't disappoint either. Reliable, unpretentious, and a proper day out.
