Craig a Barns

The walk up Craig a Barns from Dunkeld is short, steep, and absolutely worth the huffing and puffing. You're climbing roughly 300 metres over a distance that feels deceptively modest on the map, but the path is properly relentless in places - good boots recommended, especially if it's been wet.

The surrounding hills roll away in layers, and if you've timed it right the light does something rather special across the water.

This is walker territory, not a casual stroll. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper climb will manage it fine; younger ones might find the gradient tedious. History buffs won't find much at the summit itself, but the walk gives you a real sense of the landscape that shaped this part of Perthshire.

Allow 90 minutes to two hours return, depending on fitness. Mornings tend to be quieter than afternoons. If you're staying at Inver Mill Farm or Erigmore, you're beautifully positioned - Craig a Barns is practically on your doorstep. Dunkeld itself has proper refreshments, so you can grab coffee before or after without driving far.
