Craft Works Gallery sits in Northumberland's creative heartland, just far enough from Newcastle to feel properly removed from the city but close enough for an easy trip out. It's a working gallery and studio space where you can actually watch artists and craftspeople at their benches - not behind glass, but genuinely making things. You'll find everything from ceramics and jewellery to textiles and woodwork, depending on who's in residence.

The space itself is generous and light. Walking through feels less like visiting a museum and more like you've wandered into someone's serious creative operation. There's no pretension about it. You can buy work directly from the makers, which means proper conversations about materials, techniques, process. Kids tend to get something out of watching artists work, though it's not a hands-on experience - it's observation, which is actually more valuable.

If you're staying at East Farm Glamping or Springhouse Boutique Holiday Park, this works well as a half-morning detour rather than a full day's plan. Allow an hour or so, longer if you get talking to people. No admission charge that we're aware of, though obviously purchasing encourages the whole operation to keep going.

Best visited midweek when it's quieter and makers are more likely to be working. Summer months bring better light and a higher chance of finding a good range of resident artists. It's straightforward but genuine - the kind of place that reminds you craftsmanship still matters.
