Cowley Marsh Recreation Ground

Cowley Marsh sits just outside Oxford and is properly what you'd expect from a nature reserve - flat, wet ground with paths threading through it and plenty of birds if you know what to look for. It's the kind of place where you'll spot mallards, herons if you're lucky, and in spring the whole thing comes alive with the sound of frogs. The paths are straightforward, nothing demanding, and you can do a useful loop in about 45 minutes if you're not stopping to stare at things.

Birdwatchers will get the most from it, though walkers just wanting a bit of green after being in Oxford will find it decent enough. There's no visitor centre or café, so don't expect facilities - it's genuine reserve rather than a managed attraction. Free to access, which is the right price given there's not much in the way of interpretation.

If you're based at Green Acres Holiday Retreat or Durham Leys Farm Caravan Site nearby, this works as a morning outing before heading into Oxford proper. It's not spectacular - you won't find dramatic vistas or rare species that'll make you tell people about for months - but it's a solid bit of local nature that gives you a sense of what Oxfordshire looked like before the university took over. Worth an hour if you're in the area, but don't detour specially.
