Cowleaze Woods

The beech and oak woodland south of Watlington is proper walking territory. Cowleaze Woods spreads across decent acreage with a network of paths that'll take you anywhere from a quick thirty-minute loop to a couple of hours if you're keen on exploring every direction. The trees are old and substantial - the sort that make you feel properly small.

This is quintessential Chilterns walking. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, especially after rain, and there are enough changes in elevation to keep things interesting without being punishing. You'll find yourself moving between dense canopy and open glades, with decent views toward Watlington when you hit the higher bits. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the variety here is worth the effort.

Families with children aged six and up will get genuine enjoyment from the main paths, though younger kids might find the longer routes tedious. The terrain is manageable for most abilities, though it's not wheelchair-friendly throughout. If you're staying at White Mark Glamping, Home Farm, or Bella Vista Camping, this is within easy reach and makes for a solid morning or afternoon out.

Winter is actually better than summer here - fewer insects and better sightlines. Spring brings bluebells along the more sheltered sections, which is worth timing a visit around. There's no admission charge or facilities on-site, so pack water and check the weather beforehand. Allow two hours minimum if you want to do it properly rather than just a quick circuit.
