Cow Plantation

Walking into Cow Plantation feels like stepping back in time - this chunk of ancient woodland near Royston is properly quiet, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a working forest rather than a manicured nature reserve, which means you get the real deal: mature trees, dappled light, and paths that meander without much faffing about with interpretation boards.

The woodland itself is the main draw here. Walkers will find it genuinely rewarding - the terrain's manageable but interesting, with enough variation to keep you engaged for a couple of hours. It's the kind of walk where you might spot roe deer if you're lucky, or at least the evidence they've been through. Families with kids who are past the pushchair stage will do well here; there's room to explore without the feeling you're on a tourist conveyor belt.

I'd allow two to three hours if you're not rushing, maybe longer if you want to properly poke around. Spring brings the woodland floor to life with bluebells, which is worth timing a visit for. Summer can get buggy in the damper spots, so early morning's your best bet then.

If you're based at Guilden Gate Glamping or Pightle Farm Campsite nearby, this makes an excellent morning out without needing to travel far. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's solid woodland walking with none of the crowds you'd get at the big name spots. Sometimes that's exactly what you want.
