Court Wood

Ancient beech trees tower overhead, their canopies filtering Canterbury's traffic noise into something approaching woodland peace. Court Wood sits just outside the cathedral city, offering a proper escape without the drive to more distant forests.

Dog walkers dominate the early morning paths, though families arrive later with pushchairs that cope reasonably well on the main tracks. The woodland paths wind through mixed deciduous growth - nothing spectacular, but reliably pleasant for an hour's stroll. Kids will find enough fallen logs and interesting hollows to keep them occupied, though don't expect adventure playground levels of excitement.

Accessible year-round, the wood works best in spring when bluebells carpet sections of the forest floor, or autumn when the leaf colour actually justifies the short detour from Canterbury's tourist trail. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic when fully leafed.

For families staying at nearby sites like Canterbury Lodges or the Camping and Caravanning Club pitch, this makes a decent morning walk before tackling Canterbury Cathedral. It's free, obviously, and you'll have it largely to yourself outside weekends. The proximity to Canterbury Lodges - less than a mile - means you could easily pop over for a pre-breakfast ramble. Not worth travelling specially for, but a solid addition to a Kent holiday base.
