Court Moated Site

The earthworks at Court are easy to walk past without realising what you're looking at. A slight depression in the ground, some raised banks - that's it, really. But this is what remains of a medieval moated site, the kind of fortified farmhouse that Welsh gentry would have occupied centuries ago. The moat itself is largely silted up now, though you can still trace where the water once ran, creating a defensive ring around the dwelling.

It's genuinely interesting if you're into medieval settlement patterns, less so if you just want a pretty walk. The site sits near Newport in Pembrokeshire, accessible enough for a brief detour but not something to plan your day around. Allow twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're photographing the earthworks or sketching them out. No facilities, no interpretation boards - you're reading the landscape yourself, which some will love and others will find frustrating.

Worth combining with a stay at Llwyngwair Manor Holiday Park three miles away, particularly if you're already exploring the archaeology and castles scattered across Pembrokeshire. The wider area has proper medieval sites like Manorbier Castle and Pembroke, so Court works better as a supplement than as a standalone visit. Walkers and history enthusiasts will get something from it. Everyone else can probably skip it without losing sleep.
