Carn Clust-y-ci

The walk up Carn Clust-y-ci rewards you with views that stretch across the Preseli Hills and down towards the Pembrokeshire coast. It's not a huge peak - nothing that will take your breath away in the lung-busting sense - but the vistas on a clear day are genuinely fine. The summit itself is rocky and spare, the sort of place where you feel properly away from things even though Newport is only a few miles south.

This is a walker's hill rather than a tourist attraction. There's no visitor centre, no café at the top, no gift shop. You turn up, park somewhere sensible near Newport, and foot it across open moorland. Allow an hour to ninety minutes for the round trip depending on your fitness and how much time you spend gazing about at the view. The path is clear enough but muddy in places after rain - proper Pembrokeshire weather territory.

Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might struggle with the exposed moorland and lack of features. History types should know the Preseli Hills were sacred ground to Bronze Age people and later the source of bluestones for Stonehenge. It's that sort of place - ancient and a bit austere.

Stay at Llwyngwair Manor or Trewrach just down the road and you've got a proper base for exploring the Pembrokeshire hills on foot. Combine this with coastal walks around Fishguard Bay and you've got yourself a solid week of Welsh walking. Best tackled in summer when you actually stand a chance of seeing something beyond the mist.
