Cottage Wall

Just outside Plymouth, there's a stretch of medieval stonework that most visitors completely walk past without realising what they're looking at. Cottage Wall is the surviving fragment of a 14th-century fortification - basically the last bit standing of what was once a proper defensive structure. It's genuinely modest, mind you. You're not getting dramatic turrets or soaring archways here. What you get is a solid reminder that this corner of Devon mattered enough to defend.

The wall itself is weathered, patchworked with centuries of repairs and ivy, the kind of thing that rewards actually stopping to run your hand over the stone rather than just snapping a photo. It tells you something about medieval military thinking - the construction, the angle, why they bothered putting effort here of all places.

Historically minded visitors will find it worth the detour, particularly if you're already exploring Plymouth's other medieval sites. Kids tend to lose interest quickly unless you can spin them a story about battles and sieges - it's not interactive, and there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards to speak of. The approach walk is pleasant enough, though, and it slots neatly into a broader ramble around the area.

If you're based at Dartmoor Domes or Langstone Manor, both within easy reach, you could comfortably pair it with the moorland walking that dominates the region. Cottage Wall works best as part of a Plymouth history trail rather than a standalone attraction. Admission appears to be free - it's open to the landscape, no barriers - though you'll want to check access before heading out.
