Eylesbarrow

The walk up Eylesbarrow takes you onto proper Dartmoor - granite, gorse, and a sense of space that's genuinely hard to find elsewhere in Devon. It's not the highest peak on the moor, but the views across the landscape matter more than the elevation figures. On a clear day you get clear sightlines to Burrator Reservoir and out towards Princetown. The summit itself is modest, with scattered rocks and the kind of wind that'll have you reaching for an extra layer even in summer.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a casual stroll - allow two to three hours depending on fitness and the path conditions, which can be bog-heavy after rain. The nearest significant town is Plymouth, about 30 miles south, so plan accordingly. Families with older kids capable of proper moorland walking will enjoy it; younger ones might find the exposed terrain a bit much.

Accessibility-wise, you're looking at moorland parking and a straightforward walk up from the south. There's no café, no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of. That's rather the point. If you're staying at Langstone Manor Holiday Park or Dartmoor Domes, both within six miles, this makes a proper half-day excursion. Even Dartmoor National Park's broader walking network makes Eylesbarrow a sensible waypoint rather than a destination in isolation. Go when the weather's settled - moorland visibility changes fast.
